authentic handcrafted Japanese clay teapot

Home to thousands of ancient kilns, the city of Tokoname has been a center of ceramic production since the 12th century and is one of the oldest pottery production sites in Japan. Pottery makers hone their skills from a young age. Teapots from this region are famous worldwide for the quality of their clay, skillful tailoring and elegant aesthetics.

Hailing from a region surrounded by active volcanoes, the legendary clay used to make Tokoname teapots is rich in iron, has a very fine texture. Many tea connoisseurs believe that unglazed clay enhances or provides a backbone to the tea’s flavor by adding a subtle minerality or sweetness. Over time aspects of the tea become ingrained in the pot, making every infusion better than the last.

This teapot works wonderfully with traditional white, green, oolong, black or dark teas. Because it was created specifically for Japanese teas (which have characteristically thin, needle-like leaves), Tokoname teapots are especially well suited for fine-leaf green teas. Due to the porous nature of unglazed clay, it is recommended that only one type of tea be used per pot.

authentic handcrafted Japanese clay teapot

Size: approximately 4.25” x 2.5” (without handle or spout)
Holds: 12 oz
Color: red earth
Material: unglazed clay
Infuser: removable, stainless steel infuser basket
Origin: Japan
Ideal for brewing: single or small cups of white, green, oolong, black or dark tea. This teapot was designed to brew traditional Japanese green teas, but also works well with unflavored white, green, oolong, black or dark tea. Since this teapot is small by Western standards, it is ideal for preparing Western-style tea-for-one. However, it also works wonderfully serving tea to multiple people when using Eastern brewing methods (smaller 2-4 ounce teacups, higher leaf-to-water ratio, and multiple, short re-steepings served in quick succession). Small teapots concentrate and maximize the flavor of fine teas, allow for a more thorough and even infusion, and prevent waste.
Care: Rinse your Tokoname teapot after each use with hot water and a soft cleaning pad. Allow teapot to dry completely before replacing lid or storing. Before first use and periodically after, clean teapot by filling with boiling water for 5-10 minutes. Do not use dishwashing soap because the porous clay will absorb the chemical flavor of the soap. Rinsing with hot or boiling water after each use is sufficient and standard care for clay teapots.
