About South America
Yerba Maté, or Maté (pronounced “MAH-tay”) is the herbal tea of choice throughout South America, treasured for its robust flavor and uplifting energy. As the national drink of Argentina, Urugua, and Paraguay maté is also widely popular in Brazil and Chile where it has been as a natural pick-me-up for centuries and remains one of the most popular drinks in the region. Just as espresso is to Italians, Maté has a strong cultural significance and is part of daily life in much of South America.
Maté is traditionally drank from a hollowed-out gourd through a metal straw known as a bombilla, with small holes on the end to act as a sieve. The gourd is filled with dried leaves and stems from the plant, frequently refilled with hot water and passed from person to person as a social activity meant to share among friends, unite and connect people. When you enter someone’s home in South America, you will likely be offered a maté. It’s not uncommon to see a group of friends passing a steaming gourd in a circle from one person to another, as in many parts of South America, people carry mate, a gourd, bombilla, and thermos of hot water with them everywhere they go. Maté is the beverage of choice for staying alert during work or study.
Rich in natural stimulants, including caffeine, theobromine, and theophylline (which are also found in tea and chocolate) maté produces a gradual, sustained, natural energy rather than the peak and valley of an energy drink, or even the buzz and crash of coffee. One cup of maté contains about 80 milligrams of caffeine, which is twice as much as black tea but less than a cup of coffee.
Maté is considered an herbal tea since it is not made from the tea plant, but rather from the leaves of the Ilex paraguarienis, a holly tree indigenous to the Amazon rainforest. When harvested according to natural and organic methods, maté is a renewable rainforest product and is part of a socially and environmentally conscious movement to promote non-timber forestry products in the Amazon rainforest. Octavia Tea's yerba maté protects the precious rainforests through the production and promotion of a sustainable product, offering people a viable alternative income to destructive logging and cattle ranching.
Maté recently migrated to the US where it is popular ingredient in everything from health elixirs to energy drinks and celebrated for its robust antioxidant content and for its natural ability to boost energy, improve mood, enhance mental clarity and focus, support immune-system health, regulate intestinal function, suppress appetite, and aid weight loss.
Maté has a bittersweet, earthy, mineral flavor with pleasantly toasty nuances of eucalyptus.
